Founder | EMDRIA-Trained EMDR Therapist | AZBBHE Approved Clinical Supervisor

I founded Smiles Trauma Recovery from a deeply personal understanding of how life can change after injury, chronic pain, and illness. I know what it feels like when the life you once recognized begins to feel smaller, when everyday things become harder, and when you find yourself wondering how to feel like yourself again.

My own recovery didn't happen all at once. It began with small steps. A walk to the mailbox. Then a little farther outside. Eventually, a return to hiking and spending time in the places that have always helped me feel connected to life. Each step mattered, not because it brought me back to who I was before, but because it helped me discover what was still possible.

That experience continues to shape the way I approach therapy. I believe healing begins with feeling seen, understood, and supported—not with pressure to change or expectations about how quickly you should move forward. My work brings together evidence-based trauma treatment, clinical knowledge, and genuine human connection. I see myself as a guide, helping you understand the terrain of your experiences, reconnect with your strengths, and build tools for the path ahead.

I believe healing is not about becoming who you were before. It is about finding ways to feel more at home in yourself, reconnect with what matters, and create a life that feels meaningful to you now.

Outside of the therapy room, you'll often find me exploring nature with my family and our therapy dog, Phil. Whether hiking, discovering new places, or simply taking time to be outdoors, those moments remind me of the importance of connection, presence, and the small things that make us feel alive.

Clinical Mental Health Therapist

I believe everyone has a story, and that healing begins when we feel seen, heard, and understood without judgment. My approach to therapy is warm, compassionate, and collaborative, creating space for people to explore their experiences, better understand themselves, and discover new ways forward.

Originally from Kenya, I bring a multicultural perspective to my work and a deep appreciation for how culture, relationships, and life experiences shape who we are. I am especially passionate about trauma therapy and helping people understand how difficult experiences can continue to affect their sense of safety, relationships, self-worth, and emotional well-being. Our past can help explain who we are today, but it does not have to define who we become.

I hold a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Grand Canyon University and a Master of Arts in Corporate Communication from Daystar University in Kenya. My clinical experience includes working with children, adolescents, and adults navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, relationship challenges, and major life transitions. I draw from CBT, DBT, person-centered therapy, and trauma-informed approaches, tailoring treatment to each person's needs, experiences, and goals.

Outside of therapy, I am a mother, lifelong learner, and advocate for culturally responsive mental health care. I value family, meaningful relationships, personal growth, and continuing to learn from the people and communities around me.

I believe healing is possible when you have the space to be understood, supported, and empowered to find your own way forward. You don't have to have everything figured out to begin.

Social Work Intern

Mariah approaches social work with warmth, curiosity, and a genuine respect for each person's unique story. As she completes her Bachelor of Social Work, she is gaining hands-on experience at Smiles Trauma Recovery, where she is developing her clinical skills through trauma-informed care, reflection, and collaboration.

Her previous experience supporting individuals and families navigating complex systems has shaped her understanding of advocacy, resilience, and the many ways life experiences influence our well-being. Mariah is drawn to a whole-person approach that looks beyond immediate concerns to recognize each individual's experiences, strengths, relationships, and goals.

Working alongside Lisa and Maureen, Mariah is expanding her understanding of trauma, the healing process, and how compassionate, evidence-informed care can support meaningful change. She values creating an environment where people feel heard, respected, and accepted without judgment.

Mariah believes that every person deserves to feel seen and understood, and she is committed to continuing to learn, grow, and develop the skills to support others along their journey.

You don't have to have everything figured out to begin.

Riah, Medical Administrator

Riah

Medical Administrator

Riah is often the first voice you'll hear when connecting with Smiles Trauma Recovery. She brings warmth, compassion, and attention to detail to every interaction, helping with scheduling, insurance, billing, records, and referral coordination.

She understands that reaching out for support or navigating the details of care can feel overwhelming. Whether she is helping a new client get started or coordinating with attorneys, physicians, and other providers, Riah is committed to making the process feel clear, respectful, and supportive.

Her goal is simple: to help every person feel welcomed, cared for, and supported from the very first interaction.

Dr. Phil, a curly cream-colored therapy dog, sitting beside a mountain lake

Dr. Phil

Chief Therapy Dog

Phil has a special talent for sensing when emotions are running high. When clients welcome a little extra support, he's happy to offer his quiet companionship, a gentle presence, or simply a reason to pause, breathe, and smile.

He reminds us that connection doesn't always require words and that sometimes the simplest moments can bring a little comfort.

Outside the practice, Phil enjoys naps, paddle boarding, hiking, camping, and exploring the Arizona backcountry. He believes in showing up for others, but also in the importance of a good work-life balance.

Whether he's offering a comforting presence or enjoying a well-earned nap, Phil brings a little extra warmth, joy, and connection to Smiles Trauma Recovery. 🐾

How we work

A trail guide, not someone who walks the path for you

Therapy begins with safety and connection. You do not have to tell your story before you are ready, and we work at a pace that feels manageable.

Sessions are 55 minutes, held as online sessions anywhere in Arizona. Sessions are typically scheduled once or twice weekly, with timing agreed together.
